Inception Part 2 - What’s in a name?

Gematria and the Sephirot

As I previously mentioned, Gematria is the esoteric study of the relationship between number and words. Most ancient languages used the letters of their alphabets to also represent their number system.

Thus A would be one, B would be two etc. etc. I discovered that words that had similar numerical values were thought to be in some way related, giving greater meaning to the words themselves

So one of the first words that I picked up on was the name David, because it had the numerical value of 14.

It is comprised of just 3 letters, as there are no vowels as such in Hebrew, and spelt with the letters D or Dalet, V or Vav and D or Dalet again, the letter values being 4, 6 and 4 totalling 14.

Now at the time for whatever reason again maybe I was starting to listen to my awakening intuition this made me wonder about my own name and what value it might take. Maybe I could gain further insight into who I am by knowing the number of my name?

So I did some research as there is no equivalent name in Hebrew and came up with the spelling of my given name Lance. Like 'David' it consisted of just three letters with no vowels, the letters were Lamed, Nun and Samech.

So the Value for Lamed is 30, the value of Nun is 50 and the Value of Samech is 60, total value 140.

At this point I was a little taken aback with this continuing synchronicity and had to share it with my best friend.

He listened intently to my story and seemed to be almost as excited by it as I was and then he asked a question, which seems to be an almost instinctual human response.‘ What does it all mean?’

My inability to give an answer to this pertinent question seemed to deflate his enthusiasm and inflate his scepticism.

However I felt that I had discovered something, even though I wasn’t sure what it was. And his scepticism, rather than being a negative, I saw as a positive way of helping keep me honest in my search, as the last thing I wanted was to do was repeat the mistakes of my religious past.

As I pondered upon all that had happened, I did wonder what I had uncovered. My initial desire to have a number, was to test the validity of the 'Alphabetics' methodology, however I felt that there was more to it than just that.

My intuition made me think that maybe these further synchronicities associated with Hebrew and Gematria might be indicators that there was something bigger behind this and that things like Alphabetics were just tapping into whatever that was.

So without knowing what I was looking for or where I might find it, I decided that as these numbers seem to be intimately tied in with Hebrew, that this is where I should continue with my search for answers.

Ha Qabalah...

You may have heard of Kabbalah or Cabala Or even Qabala. All three sound the same but each is slightly different in its esoteric origin. Kabbalah, with a K, refers to the esoteric traditions of Judaism. It is practiced by Jews, and is used as a method for interpreting the Jewish scriptures.

Cabala, with a C, is an adaptation adapted to Christian mysticism and has a link with magic.

Qabala, with a Q, refers to the Hermetic tradition and is primarily concerned with the nature of divinity.

Within this mystical tradition is the idea that the manifest universe, of which material creation is a part, arose as a series of divine emanations from the godhead. Those emanations manifest as something called the Sephiroth, the tree of life.

The 10 Sephiroth

So while looking into the Qabala I discovered the divine emanations or the Sephiroth, these are meant to be the 10 aspects of the divine, forming a tree of life.

Immediately a couple of things stuck me, firstly was that the second and third aspect represented the left and right side of the brain, with Chochmah or Wisdom the second aspect representing the right hemisphere and being referred to as Abba ("the father").

The “Wisdom” of Chochmah also implies the ability to look deeply at some aspect of reality and abstract its conceptual essence till one succeeds in uncovering its underlying axiomatic truth, which then can be conveyed to the companion power of Binah for the sake of intellectual analysis and development.

The path connecting Chochmah to Binah is labelled as number 14. So in other words One must go to the Father to gain wisdom by looking deeply at some aspect of reality and then that wisdom must be passed along path number 14 to enable understanding.

Now each path has a letter associated with it and path 14 has the letter Daleth (fourth letter of the alphabet) associated with it and Daleth means door or doorway. So wisdom has to pass through a door before it can be understood?

The synchronicity didn’t stop there though because like all Hebrew words both Chochmah and Binah have numerical or Gematria Values. The Gematria value of Chochmah (“Wisdom”) equals 73 and Binah (“Understanding”) has the Gematria of 67.

So Wisdom (73) + Understanding (67) = 140.

So 140 represents the coming together of a divide, of left and right, of father and mother? Just to sort of complete this first synchronistic cycle and return like a circle back to the beginning. I did a search for wisdom and understanding to see what other connections I might find and it took me to a very famous verse in Revelation.

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (666). Revelation 13:18

So all the way back to the original number 666 that piqued my initial curiosity with slightly more wisdom and understanding.

This cycle made me think that maybe synchronicity is perhaps cyclical, hence why we can see patterns in it. If we think about it, pretty much everything in life follows some kind of cycle, from an hour in the day, to the seasons of the year, to the great celestial year itself.

This all was begining to feel very real and I felt like I stood at the doorway of something, but what did I need to do to open that door?
